President's Message

by Ron ShakleeChapter 143 President

A Warm Welcome to all Past, Present, and Future Chapter 143 Phi Kappa Phi Members!

Welcome to the Chapter 143, Phi Kappa Phi website! It is my honor and privilege to serve as your Chapter President for the next two years, 2014 to 2016.

In August 2014, Phi Kappa Phi held its national biennial convention in St. Louis, Missouri. The convention provided me with an opportunity to share information with other chapter leaders regarding the successes Chapter 143 has enjoyed over the years. I was invited to be a part of a Partnering for Success panel whose members recounted the stories of the successful ventures undertaken by their chapters. Though the words may have been mine, the successes I shared were a tribute to the excellent nature of our past leadership of Chapter 143. The meeting helped me understand the challenges we face and put them into the larger context of a national setting. Phi Kappa Phi is one of the most prestigious of the National Honor Societies and the meeting was a tremendous opportunity to deepen my understanding of core concepts behind Phi Kappa Phi and develop a better understanding of the relationship between the national organization and the individual chapters.

The national organization of Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and currently has over 300 hundred chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Over one million dollars in scholarship money is awarded annually to deserving recipients. Youngstown State University students and alumni have benefited from Phi Kappa Phi grants and awards programs. Chapter 143 student members routinely benefit from Study Abroad Scholarships. Our student members compete for, and win, Chapter Scholarships and National Fellowships for graduate study. Our graduates also receive the societyís Love of Learning Award that helps fund learning opportunities beyond the bachelorís degree.

For many years, Chapter 143 has enjoyed strong leadership. That has helped us gain prominence and recognition at the local and national levels. Under the guidance of Presidents Tammy King (2008-2010), Rebecca Geltz (2010-2012), and Christine Cobb (2012-2014), Chapter 143 was awarded the Chapter of Excellence Award four times since 2009. The criteria for the award are established by the national board of Phi Kappa Phi and only a small percentage of chapters are so honored. Congratulations to Tammy, Rebecca, Chris and the Executive Board of Chapter 143! In addition, Rick Shale, past chapter historian, has served as Vice President for Chapter Relations on the National Board. Tammy King received a Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant for her project designed to supply inmates at the Trumbull Correctional Institution with Graduation Equivalency Degree preparation materials in both English and Spanish. Chapter 143 Executive Board members Ron Shaklee and Rebecca Geltz both served on national committees that evaluated applicants for the Study Abroad and Love of Learning Award.

Phi Kappa Phi members include best-selling novelists David Baldacci and John Grisham; former President Jimmy Carter; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; NASA Astronaut Wendy Lawrence; former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Netscape founder James Barksdale; and YSUís President Jim Tressel are among the societyís many accomplished members.

During the course of the year we will periodically e-mail updates on Chapter activities, accolades and upcoming events. This information will also be posted on the Chapter website. We invite you to become involved! Contact any of the Chapter officers listed on the website if you wish to play an active role in events or if you have a service activity you would like us to consider. Join us and become involved in our campus, community, and national initiatives!
